From laidlaws at hotkey.net.au Mon Jun 29 22:32:42 2009 From: laidlaws at hotkey.net.au (Doug Laidlaw) Date: Mon, 29 Jun 2009 22:32:42 +1000 Subject: [Boykett-announce] WebRing dropped Message-ID: <200906292232.42665.laidlaws@hotkey.net.au> Many small sites were hosted at Geocities (http://geocities.yahoo.com/). Geocities will be closing down later this year and all sites are looking for a new host. Many are members of WebRing, and Webring is offering them a new home. I discovered that my WebRing was closed down in 2000 by its maintainer. He claimed that WebRing was also under Yahoo! and he could not cope with their requirements. His personal page is hosted by Tripod, a network similar to Geocities. I have never noticed any link between WebRing and Yahoo, and as an end user, I have never really had a problem with linking up. On the other hand, the Boykett site has never benefited from WebRing (even before 2000,) and my Lions site has had about 2 messages in 15 years. I have therefore deleted the link to WebRing and replaced it with the search engine from FamilyTreeSeeker.com. FamilyTreeSeeker.com replaces an earlier search engine for family tree sites, called Gendex; see http://www.familytreeseeker.com/faq.php?l=en&p=14. All Gencircles sites offered a link to it. Gendex closed down some time ago, and FamilyTreeSeeker.com revived the idea later. All linked sites are updated on its database regularly. Doug.
