From laidlaws at hotkey.net.au Mon Jul 19 15:03:19 2010 From: laidlaws at hotkey.net.au (Doug Laidlaw) Date: Mon, 19 Jul 2010 15:03:19 +1000 Subject: [Boykett-announce] Thomas Boykett "of Enderby." Message-ID: <201007191503.19924.laidlaws@hotkey.net.au> I have updated the Marriages page on my Web site to allow for the uncertainty about which Enderby was referred to in Thomas' early life. The only reference to Enderby, Lincolnshire is the announcement of his marriage in an Anglican publication under the Diocese of Lincoln. But the announcement calls him "Rev." when he was only 19. If they got one part of the story wrong, why not another? It doesn't actually say he is of Lincolnshire, only of Enderby. In favour of Leicestershire: - There was an active Congregational Church at Enderby, Leicestershire. There was no one place in Lincolnshire called just Enderby, and I have been told that the Congregational Church had no presence there at the time. - In his oath in support of his marriage licence, Thomas says Leicestershire. That may have been inserted by the clerk, but Thomas is the kind of person who would have got it right. In the page and the draft book I have that there is a record of Thomas leading prayers at Enderby. That is incorrect. Thomas, of Enderby, opened Rev. Bunn's ordination by reading a prayer. A very different thing. Doug.
